Artmag Review: Meet the Glasgow Masters: GSA Showcase Returns

“Ageing, Dementia and Loss” reflects an intense, period, when the artist cared for her mother who had dementia. She hopes to express the emotions of my mother/daughter relationship during that time and allow the viewer to reflect and consider their own losses.
She used materials that have a memory of the owner and by painting on these objects, she is adding her marks to the marks and memories already there. Bedsheets and handkerchiefs are silent witnesses to the natural processes in life and the passage of time. They are lightweight, transparent fabrics that can move easily in a slight air current. Like a shallow breath or sigh, they speak to fragility and loss.
The layering of fabric hints at the claustrophobic nature of caring for a dementia sufferer. Enclosed indoors within a repetitive cycle where the outside viewer cannot see beyond the curtained window. The aged and their carer are isolated and hidden from the rest of society.
